CHAPTER 18

RETURN TO VIENNA

A sharp noise of concussion sounded from some distance up the road. Camila peered ahead and saw the familiar figure clothed all in blue. Fausta had teleported to about a hundred yards of their position. The sorceress stood patiently as Camila and Rupert rode up to her. She then clambered aboard her horse with a look of disdain.

“I see that you had some consideration in where you teleported this time, Fausta,” remarked Camila.

“People get so angry at me!” the enchantress sulked.

“Well, it’s not natural!” snapped Camila.

“What’s not natural?” interjected Rupert. “Fausta has amazing control over her teleportation skill. I wish I could teleport precisely to where I wanted.”

“It’s not natural for people to disappear and reappear out of thin air,” continued Camila. “Whatever elements you’re toying with, they are God’s domain and not that of humans’.”

“And you think healing a wound entirely with only a flash of light from your hands is natural?!” retorted Fausta. “Or creating some strange light in your weapon? I certainly don’t see many people able to do those things.”

“The abilities I possess have been granted by the will of the Heavenly Father,” declared Camila. “I only do His bidding.”

“Well, perhaps He has granted me my abilities as well!” Fausta shot back. “You cannot know the will of a god.”

“But you don’t believe in Him,” said Camila. “You don’t pray to Him. You don’t have faith in Him. That’s the difference.”

“It may not make any difference to him,” retorted Fausta. “We may be nothing more than his playthings and he does what he wants to amuse himself.”

Camila knew she could drag the argument on forever if need be, but what would be the point? She opted to change the subject. “Were you able to reach Talitha and Atreal?”

“Of course,” replied the sorceress. “They are about twenty teleports…I mean…,” she paused, her face screwed up in thoughtful consideration, “…about a day’s ride northeast of Vienna. Talitha also wanted me to tell you that she orders you not to have any contact with Duke Frederick. There isn’t time for that.”

“Talitha doesn’t give me any orders,” Camila replied, her jaw set and lips becoming a thin line.

“I told Talitha that you’d probably say something like that,” replied the sorceress.

“We are beginning to become quite familiar with one another, aren’t we, Fausta?” Camila spurred her horse and Fausta did the same to keep pace. Rupert urged his own mount along as he brought up the rear.

The companions had ridden for a good part of the day and could now make out the city walls of Vienna growing in the distance.

“Fausta, do you possess anything that might make you slightly less noticeable?” queried Camila.

“Whatever do you mean?”

“When we get to Vienna, I’d rather not bring an undo amount of attention to ourselves. And you entirely clothed in blue…well—”

“I like attention!” proclaimed the sorceress.

“I’m well aware of that,” Camila replied. “But for the purposes of our stay in Vienna, can you wear something to help blend in?”

“Fine, I’ll wear a riding cloak.
